I am no culinary genius...I don't know if I would even go as far as saying I'm a good cook. I will say that I have found great and fulfilling enjoyment in pretending that I am.
I've decided to add recipes (ones I have actually tried....I will not post something until I have tasted it at least once) to my blog. Even though I am not like a million others out there trying to create a primarily food-related blog, I think it's still appropriate. My little story is about all things (plus some) that go along with my family at this transitional time in our life.
When we moved to Iowa I stumbled across the realization I like to cook....I really like it. It started with us moving into my in-laws house and trying to just contribute to the household. If we are going to live here, rent free and I am able to still be a stay at home mom, the very least I can do is have the house kind of clean and a hot meal for everyone as they get in from work and school. It started with just basic things I have been cooking for years, nothing special...classic stuff like tacos, hamburger helper, spaghetti with the jar stuff, ect. One day, someone had passed down some cooking magazines to my mother in law. It was all over from the time I flipped the first page. Edible possibilities unfolded before my eyes and from out of no where my mind opened up. I felt like for the first time in my life I might actually be able to cook something more complicated than just following directions on a box.
So it's been about 5 months, I am now a regular surfer on several recipe websites, I have subscribed to a cooking magazine, and I watch cooking shows for fun when nothing else is on. Instead of trying to find recipes that are simple enough for me to understand, I look for one's where I don't know what the heck they are talking about and research each ingredient and technique that looks foreign to me. I (and the internet) have taught myself how to make breads and pies (down to the crust), cookies, pastries, meats, veggies and so much more. I'm even starting to make up my own stuff, collaborating things I liked about several recipes and coming up with one that suits my pallet better.
If nothing else, I am definitely coming away from this experience a much much better cook than I was before...and it has been a blast. I bet I owe the kitchen quite a bit of credit to all this positive energy I seem to be radiating (as well as my jeans fitting a little tighter).
I'm no expert by any means. I'm still very new to a lot of things in the kitchen. I worry a little I am going to write a recipe wrong and you are going to ruin dinner and waste money because of me, so I will try to be very meticulous with the content I put on here.
There have been times when I have tried a dish and it failed miserably due to a poorly written recipe...I will try hard not to do that to you. (Don't get me wrong, I am completely capable of ruining a recipe all on my own as well.)
Please be sure to let me know how things turn out for you and if I need to tweak the recipes to make them clearer or easier to follow. If you don't understand something, please ask. I will check back frequently, so if you are in the middle of cooking and something doesn't make sense, there is a chance I will answer your question in time. Feel free to share great recipes of your own...I love getting new ideas straight from the person it comes from.
Hope you find as much enjoyment out of cooking my little collection of yummy things to eat as I did.
